Nick's SteelheadReport

Silver Bullet Fishing

This was the year that had an odd, yet perfectly timed steelhead run. While most years the peak of the run is over by mid April, this year the run held off until I was done with school. I was fortunate enough to be able to make it out during the middle of the week on many occasions and fish in solitude with plenty of fish in the river. I had my best day ever on Friday, May 9th when I hooked 14 steelhead and landed 9 in about 5 hours of fishing. As late as May 17th I was still landing fish. The smaller rivers, such as the Little Manistee, produced quite well. Tiny spawn bags (3-6 steelhead eggs) were the bait of choice, but I would also try an occasional fly (wigglers and wooly buggers). The larger, more popular rivers, such as the PM, AuSable, and the Rogue did not have runs like usual, but all in all this was definitely my best year of steelheading. I will also try to make a trip to the UP in search of a few last steelhead before we make the move to Georgia.
