WALTER (TEDDY) Walter J. Kern married
Frieda Loesel (a farm girl) on 08/10/30.
Frieda’s grandfather was Lorenz Loesel, one of the original 15
settlers of Frankenmuth, who was instrumental in guiding the group to
Frankenmuth. Walter or Teddy as he was
known in town, was employed by the U.S. Postal Service for 50 years, being
the head Postmaster for some of those years. Frieda and Walter had one
daughter, Marjorie Ann (German) . Teddy’s nickname was
acquired as a young child when he won a foot race against a dog named
Teddy. He had athletic
abilities in various sports. His
short and wiry physique helped him as a catcher for the Frankenmuth
Baseball Team. He was asked
by a scout to try-out for the Toledo Mudhens, a minor league team.
In those days, baseball players were not held in high esteem, so
his mother would not allow him to join the professional baseball circuit.
He always wondered if he would have made the team. Walter and brother Ruben
(also known as Rube) were the best of friends and usually were involved in
activities together, so when writing about one or the other, it is
necessary to combine the discussion.
