Side Story: I
emailed Wallace Kern and inquired if a picture of Sabina
existed....well, I'll let Wally tell the story:
"No, I
don’t think a picture exist of Sabina. You know why?
In 1884 on the Fifth of July the Wilhelm Kern boys
burned the house down shooting off firecrackers. So,
before that time everything was lost in the fire as far
as I know." |
Gravestone of Johann Wilhelm Kern
Johann Wilhelm Kern's gravestone,
whose first wife, Sabina is above, is located just west of St. Lorenz Church. The
west side of the marker lists Johann on the right, and his twenty-four year
old, unmarried son, George
Joseph Kern (a.k.a Georgla), on the left. Johann's second wife (Anna) Margeretha is
listed on the east side of the stone.
According to Wallace
Kern, who tended this grave site as a youth, all three are buried on the
east side of the marker. Wallace also noted that the small
monument titled "MUTER" (mother) just west of the Kern gravestone is
associated with the burials directly to the west.
The top
of the stone reads: HEIR RUHEN IN GOTT (Here Rests in God)
