HARRY RUBEN KERN
 (Millington Connection)
By Franklin L. Kern

Harry was the athlete in the family.  He attended St. Lorenz Lutheran School, Frankenmuth High School (2 years) and final two years at Arthur Hill High School.  (Frankenmuth High School only had 9th and 10th grades at that time, and students were then bused to Saginaw for the last two years).  At Arthur Hill he played baseball, and had to get his own transportation home from school, since practice was after the school day.

He was scouted by the Chicago White Sox and was signed to a minor league contract at Clarksville, Tennessee in the Kitty League, Class D.  He subsequently played in the Western Association, where due to a sore arm, he had to end his minor league career.  (For a brief time, he practiced in Saginaw with the local Class A professional baseball team, The Saginaw Bears).

In his youth, he was a member of a local band, playing the trombone, however his great love was always sports, while music was not one of his great interests.  (In this respect he was similar to his uncle Walter).

Harry married Lucille Schleier on June 23, 1952.  They lived in Mt. Pleasant while he attended Central Michigan University working on his teaching degree in high school business.  While at Central, he was the captain of his baseball team.

He accepted a position at Millington High School as a business teacher.  He also coached the baseball team.  One year he was awarded the “Coach of the Year” award from the Michigan High School Athletic Assn.

Harry has had other awards for his teaching and community efforts.  He was honored at the Tuscola County “Meet of Champions” and more recently as Millington’s “Most Honored Citizen”.  He is also a member of the Frankenmuth Softball Hall of Fame along with his uncle Walter (Ted) Kern.

He is a charter member of the Millington Lion’s Club and has helped them in all of their projects.  He was instrumental in obtaining grants for building Latham Memorial Park in Millington.  His son Mike is also a member of this club.  Both have had leadership positions in the club.

Church was also important for him, where he was an Elder and Secretary of St. Pauls Lutheran Church in addition to other responsibilities.

One of Harry’s favorite pastimes is fishing.  He has for many years organized trout fishing trips to the Manistee River (at the campgrounds near the CCC bridge, about 20 miles west of Grayling, Michigan).  A trailer of his has allowed his sons, brothers, relatives and friends enjoy the north woods with him.

He has also enjoyed playing golf, being very competitive and good . ( He had a Hole-In-One).  He currently is a member of the Vassar Country Club, playing twice a week at age 75.  He is a left hander in most every thing he does, except writing.

Lucille and Harry had three sons, Steven Harry, David James, and Michael Frank.

Lucille passed away on August 9, 2002.
